Unpacking Misogynoir #3: Misogynoir in 60 Seconds

previously published in 2022 via medium

Misogynoir materializes in a way that can sometimes make it hard to identify. Many people use the notion that “it’s just a joke” or “it’s just my preference” without realizing that they are indeed perpetuating misogynoir. No one is exempt from being a misogynist. Celebrities and everyday folk can spew misognynoir in their everyday life. Misogynoir is also not specific to just cisgender men. It can be internalized by Black women as well.

Over time, I have observed many instances of misogynoir online, in the media, in movies, on television, and in literature. I have heard conversations amongst people I know and don’t know that have been misogynoiristic in nature. I have even been a part of the Black women who have internalized misogynoiristic ideals unknowingly. I am happy that I am no longer that way. As an educator, I have to teach about how to identify when misogynoir is happening and how to hold folk accountable for it. Through this, I have been inspired to take some of the lessons I learned from popular culture to social media.

Over on my TikTok, I have started a series called “Misogynoir in 60 Secs” where I take current events and talk about how they are misogynoiristic. Each video goes into the details, the how, and the why. My goal with these videos is to expose misogynoir and to show how it shows up in popular culture. I want to make these examples relatable and easy to identify with.
